HPU Men’s Golf Third After Round One In Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – After round one at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate the High Point University men’s golf team sits in third place with a team score of 290. Freshman David Long is tied for third place in the individual standings with a two-under 70.

The Panthers are five strokes back of tournament leader Appalachian State (285) and three strokes behind second-place Presbyterian College (287). The Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate is co-hosted by HPU and Gardner-Webb at Myrtle Beach National in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Long is two-under after the first round with a score of 70. He is tied for third with Gardner-Webb’s Matthew Yelverton. Sophomore McKay Tye carded an even-par 72 through the first 18 holes and he is in a seven-way tie for 12th place.

“It was a beautiful day and we are thankful to Myrtle Beach National for hosting our tournament,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “The team played solid all the way around but there is always room for improvement. David finished two-under but I feel like he can do even better tomorrow. We are five strokes out of the lead and tomorrow should be exciting as we try and track down Appalachian State and Presbyterian.”

Freshman Jack Sides finished one stroke behind Tye with a one-over 73. He is tied for 19th. Freshman Phil Oweida sits in a tie for 30th after a carded a 75 on Monday. Sophomore Tommy Dillon rounded out HPU’s team scores with an 80.

Juniors LJ Georgetti and Tyler Engel competed as individuals at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate. Georgetti carded a five-over 77 to sit in a three-way tie for 37th. Engel is 43rd with a score of 81.

Georgetti and Engel will tee off with the first two groups at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The rest of the team will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m.
