Greensboro College Pride Volleyball Suffers Setback At Meredith Tri-Match

The Greensboro volleyball team (7-10, 3-3 USA South) dropped a pair of matches during their tri match on Saturday at Meredith College. The Pride fell in their first match to Meredith 3-1, and a hard fought 3-2 loss to Methodist.

The Pride fell behind 1-0 against Meredith, dropping the first set 25-13. In the second set with the score tied at 22-22, Greensboro ran off the next three points, to win 25-22. The Avenging Angels closed the match out, however, taking the next two sets 25-13, and 25-15.

Liz Widenhouse led the way with 14 kills and 12 digs. Holly Anders and Dallas Hasty chipped in with seven kills apiece. Cortland Phillips had a match high 33 assists.

Greensboro kicked off the afternoon match against Methodist falling behind 7-2, before rallying with five straight points knotting the score at 7-7. The Pride hung tough during the rest of the set but fell 25-21.

The Pride came out with a 5-0 run, starting the second set, highlighted by two service aces by Phillips. Greensboro controlled the match from there, as they built up the margin en route to a 25-14 win.

In the third set, Greensboro held a 6-5 advantage, before seven unanswered points extended the lead to 13-5. The Monarchs tried to mount a comeback, but The Pride maintained the lead taking the set 25-18.

Methodist started the fourth set with a 7-3 lead, Greensboro fought back tying the set at 12-12. Both teams rallied back and forth, with the Monarchs prevailing 25-22..

In the deciding fifth set, the Monarchs took control early, with The Pride fighting back for a 5-4 lead. Greensboro tried to regain the lead down the stretch but was unable to falling 15-11.

Widenhouse led the way again with 14 kills. Megan Baranko contributed with 11 kills and two blocks. Phillips led the way with 38 assists and 17 digs.

The Pride will return to action on Thursday against Averett. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hanes Gym.
