Greensboro College Pride Volleyball Holds On For 3-2 Win at NC Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, NC — The Greensboro College Pride volleyball team defeated NC Wesleyan on the road in USA South play on Wednesday night by a score of 3-2.

In the first game of the match, Greensboro did not trail by more than one point in the game. Once Wesleyan got the score to 16-16, The Pride would use a 9-0 run to close out the game. During that nine point run, Liz Widenhouse had four of her 20 kills in the match.

For Wesleyan, they would not go away easily in the match. The Bishops took stride after the first break to come out and win the second game 25-17.

With the match tied at one game apiece, Greensboro opened the third game opened up with a six point run after the game was tied at four, to make it 10-4. After the run, Wesleyan used a time out to try and slow Greensboro down. However, The Pride would maintain their comfortable lead and closed out the third game on a 6-2 run to win 25-18.

In the fourth game, The Bishops would use an early seven point run to push the score to 17-10. Coach McDuffie would call a time out to calm The Pride down. Greensboro would get a little momentum following the time out to bring the score back to 17-14. Following The Pride run Wesleyan would come right back and extend the lead back out. After Greensboro made a second run of the game, The Bishops would hold on to win the fourth game 25-19 to force a fifth game.

In the decisive fifth game of the match, The Bishops would have the opening serve before Widenhouse killed the ball to give Greensboro a 1-0 lead and the serve. After getting the serve, The Pride used a four point run to make the score 5-0. Once the run ended for Greensboro, The Bishops would go on a three point run to make the score 5-4 before a Greensboro timeout was called. With the score even at seven all, The Pride used a three point rally to go up 10-7 before Wesleyan got the score to 10-8 following a Pride miscue. The Bishops called a time out but could not pull any closer dropping the final game by a score of 15-12.

For Greensboro in the win, Widenhouse had a team high in kills, but also had a big day by Dallas Hasty who contributed 16 kills in the match. Molly McGinnis and Megan Baranko led The Pride with three block assists, while Cortland Phillips passed for a match high 46 assists.

With the win, Greensboro moves to 9-12 on the season, and 5-5 in USA South play. The Pride will be back in action on Saturday in a USA South quad match in Hanes Gym. Greensboro’s games will be at 10 am and 4 pm.
