College Volleyball Final – Guilford 3, N.C. Wesleyan 0

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Brittany Freeman had 14 kills and Malikah French added 10 in Guilford College’s 3-0 volleyball win at North Carolina Wesleyan College Friday night. The Quakers (11-11) won, 25-8, 25-21, 25-19, for their fifth win in six outings. The Battling Bishops drop to 4-17.

Freeman had seven kills and Guilford hit .571 as a team in a dominating 25-8 opening-set win. Kelsey Ruehling served up three of her match-high four aces in the set and Taylor Whitley chipped in 11 assists as the Quakers used a 17-2 run to break open a 3-3 game.

The Bishops rallied and grabbed a 16-12 edge in the second set before Guilford reeled off 12 of the next 13 points to take a 24-17 lead. French contributed five of her 10 kills in the second set, including two during the decisive run.

N.C. Wesleyan held a 17-16 lead in a tight third set, but the Quakers closed the frame on a 9-2 run that featured two kills and the match-clinching ace by Ruehling.

Ruehling finished with three kills and led Guilford with four aces and 12 digs. Taylor Whitley averaged just under 12 assists per set with 35 helpers and added nine digs and three kills. Brittany DeCesare and Jessica Patrick both had five putaways for the Quakers.

Victoria Stewart’s six kills led the home team. Kayla White added four kills and led the Bishops with 13 assists. Christina Huber had a match-best 15 digs.

Guilford visits Virginia Wesleyan College Oct. 19 for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference with the Marlins and Randolph-Macon College.
