SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Guilford College’s women’s swimming team placed fifth at the Converse College Third Annual Women’s Invitational Saturday. The Quakers scored 91 points at the five-team event, which was won by the host Valkyries with 590 points. Brenau College (576) placed second, followed by Sweet Briar College (375) and Hollins University (247).
Senior Kendra Medina was Guilford’s top performer, accounting for 24.5 of the Quakers’ points. She had the team’s best individual result, an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of two minutes, 35.2 seconds, which is third-best in school history. Medina’s 1:11.34 in the 100 backstroke placed 10th among 23 swimmers and stands fifth all-time at Guilford. She also swam the lead legs of the Quakers’ 200 and 400 medley relays, both of which finished seventh.
Junior Julia Sheehan garnered 17.5 points for Guilford and scored individually in the 200 butterfly and the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Francesca Quigley contributed 12.5 points thanks to her efforts on the 200 and 400 medley relays, as well as the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Coach Emily Wilson’s team competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Relays Saturday (10/19) at Washington and Lee University.
