College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 5, Emory & Henry 1

EMORY, Va. – Five different students scored and Angel Valencia (Greensboro, N.C./Westchester Country Day) had two assists in Guilford College’s 5-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s soccer win at Emory & Henry College Saturday night. The five tallies mark Guilford’s most in a match this season and extended the Quakers’ (6-6-2, 3-4-1 ODAC) modest unbeaten streak to three.

Brenden Pearce (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest-Rolesville) got the Quakers on the scoreboard in the 18th minute off a Valencia corner kick, but the Wasps (2-14, 1-7 ODAC) answered less than two minutes later when Zach James banged home a cross from Kenny Sterne.

Senior Jovanni Catalan (Pittsboro, N.C./Northwood) connected off of Valencia’s second assist of the game in the 22nd minute, which helped Guilford take a 2-1 lead into halftime. The tally marked Catalan’s first college score.

Rob Sandidge started the second-half scoring with his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute and Corey McDonough and Christian Torres (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) netted insurance goals in the final six minutes to end the scoring.

Guilford outshot the Wasps, 18-14, and had eight of the game’s 10 corner kicks. Senior Michael MacVane made one save in goal for the Quakers. Didier Grillett had three stops for the Wasps.

Guilford entertains league-rival Roanoke College Wednesday (10/23) night in the Quakers’ regular-season home finale.
