GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s women’s swimming team placed eighth among nine teams at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Relay Invitational at Washington and Lee University Saturday. The host Generals won the meet by a comfortable margin over second-place Emory & Henry College and the rest of the field.
Guilford’s Elizabeth Backman and Emily Carter both shared team-high scoring honors, accounting for 3.92 points apiece. They both swam on Guilford’s 150-yard backstroke team, the 100 dolphin kick squad and the 8×25 freestyle relay. The 8×25 relay, which also included Jarrett Knepper and Jocelyn Gesner, had Guilford’s best result with a ninth-place finish among 10 teams in one minute, 42.36 seconds. Carter was one of a handful of Quakers that set new personal bests in various strokes as she shaved six seconds off of her previous low time in the 50-yard backstroke.
The Quakers’ 150 butterfly, 150 backstroke and 400 freestyle teams reduced their times from 2012 in the same events by a combined 22.5 seconds.
Coach Emily Wilson’s team is back in action Nov. 9 at Emory & Henry for an ODAC tri-match with Sweet Briar College and the host Wasps.
