Very interesting case here, with former AC Reynolds runningback A.J. Marion being shot to death back on September 30, in Asheville…Marion scored the only touchdown of the game for AC Reynolds back in 2009 in a huge game at Dudley High School…..
AC Reynolds and Marion ended the Dudley Panthers chances for a 4-A State Title, back on December 4, 2009 at Tarpley Stadium…Here is part of what happened on that Friday night, in the NCHSAA 4-A Football Western finals….
The AC Reynolds Rockets (13-2) trailed 8-0 at half after the offense gained just 17 yards and gave up a safety. While the offense struggled the defense was solid, allowing just a 14-yard touchdown pass from Alex Moore to Devarris Martin with 3:23 left in the first half.
The Rockets’ defense came out and stopped Dudley (13-2) on two three and outs and picked up a safety of its own after a poor snap on a punt in the third quarter.
The Rockets’ offense finally showed some life when Caleb Pressley hooked up on a 41-yard pass play with Cody Owenby, who gained 25 yards after the catch for a first down to the 9.
We talked at halftime about needing one big play and we got it, said Pressley, who was chased by the Dudley defense for most of the game.
On the next play, A.J. Marion went around the right side for a 9-yard score to tie the game at 8-8.
The Rockets’ kicking game has been spotty all season but Austin Pelle sneaked the ball over the cross bar to give the Rockets a 9-8 lead with 3:30 left in the third quarter.
Reuynolds went on to win the game that Friday evening at Dudley(final score was 9-8) and they also went on to win the State 4-A Title….Their top player was A.J. Marion….
Marion was shot to death up in Asheville and there are still many questions surrounding what happened on that fatal night on September 30….A.J.’s mom wants to know why the police shot her son and the ploice want to know why A.J. was in that neighborhood on that Sunday night…..Not exactly a Travon Martin-type setting, but this one sure has its share of question marks…..
Did not see this story when it first came down, but as soon as I saw it today, it had me thinking back to that Friday night at Dudley, back in 2009…..
Marion rushed for right at 1,800 yards/24 TD’s that season(his junior year), as he lead AC Reynolds to the State 4-A Title and he was headed to East Carolina, on a acholarship until he blew out his knee(senior year of HS), before he even had a chance to suit up of the Pirates…..
