Greensboro Men’s Soccer Captures USA South Championship

The #2 seed Greensboro college men’s soccer team defeated #1 seed Methodist 2-1 for the USA South Championship. The Pride receives an automatic bid to the NCAA soccer tournament with the victory.

In the first half neither team were able to find the score sheet playing to a scoreless first half. The second half had Greensboro netting two early goals while holding off Methodist down the stretch for the win.

The Pride got the first goal of the game when Shaun Watt headed in a cross off of George Dimopoulos foot making it 1-0. Greensboro extended the margin when Watt got his second goal of the game with an assist by Kyle Giscombe to make it 2-0.

Methodist got on the board at the 77:52 mark when Sean MacDonald scored making the score 2-1. The Pride defense held strong down the stretch winning the game 2-1.

Watt led the way with three shots, two of those on goal. Drew Clukey, Adam Smith, and Giscombe had one shot on goal apiece. Manbi Nyepon picked up the win in goal making seven saves.

After the game coach Trice said, “This was a great win for our program. Methodist is a very well coached team and pushed us to our limits tonight. We took our chances well in the second half and our midfield and defenders did a great job absorbing their pressure in the second half. It was a great finals match and we look forward to representing Greensboro College and the USA South conference in the NCAA tournament.”

With the win Greensboro improves to 13-5-2 overall. The Pride will await their first round NCAA matchup to be announced on Monday November 11.
