Brown And Chaney Lead HPU Men’s Basketball To Season’s First Win

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Redshirt-sophomore John Brown scored 26 points with nine rebounds and graduate student Allan Chaney scored 17 points with 15 rebounds to lead the High Point University men’s basketball team to a 94-64 win over Ferrum College on Tuesday night at the Millis Center.

“We wanted to come out and execute our game tonight and I thought we did that,” said HPU head coach Scott Cherry. “We were good in the first half. We need to have better defense in the paint but other than that I thought we played well.”

Brown shot 10-for-14 from the floor including eight slam dunks while Chaney went 8-for-8 from the floor. It was Chaney’s second double-double in a row to start the season. Junior guard Devante Wallace scored 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting and sophomore guard Haiishen McIntyre scored a career-high 12 points.

Ferrum had two double-digit scorers: Jamal Pullen scored 18 points and had four rebounds while Brian Clarke scored 11 points.

High Point scored the first five points and led by 10 (13-3) less than five minutes into the game on Brown’s first dunk. Ferrum gave a strong effort, getting a three-pointer by Jordan Mann on the next play and pulling within four points (23-19) on a trey from Alek Ayer, before HPU started to build its lead. Back-to-back Brown dunks, the second on an alley-oop from Dejuan McGaughy, made it 27-19. On the next play, Derrell Edwards got a steal and finished with a layup to make it a 10-point gap. Edwards had five steals in the game.

After a free throw by Ferrum’s Clarke made it 29-20 with 6:46 to go, Wallace hit a layup that kept HPU’s lead in double digits for the rest of the half. The Panthers’ lead grew to 16 points (39-23) on a Chaney layup with 3:34 left. High Pointwent to the locker room with its largest lead of the half, 45-27, on a pair of Brown free throws.

Coming out of the break, Ferrum’s Ricky Estrada hit a three-pointer but HPU answered with an 11-0 run that made it 56-30. High Point’s lead reached 30 points (66-36) when Brown hit a pair of free throws with 13:55 remaining and freshman Anthony Lindauer hit a three-pointer after that. The 33-point lead was HPU’s largest of the game and the Panthers cruised home to victory.

Thirteen players got into the game and 11 scored for HPU. High Point outscored Ferrum 68-14 in the paint and 20-2 on fast breaks. HPU improved to 1-1 on the season. It counted as an exhibition game for Ferrum.
