Southeast Guilford Lady Falcon Basketball Preview

The Southeast Guilford Lady Falcon basketball team will kick off the 2013-2014 season tomorrow night at Providence Grove High School. The Lady Falcons have a vision of taking this team deep into the state playoffs again this season. The Metro-4A Conference is arguably the best women’s high school basketball conference in the state. The Lady Falcon conference games on any night are as good as any state playoff matchup. Dudley, Page, Smith and Southern Alamance always have great talent and are very well coached.

The Lady Falcons lost four seniors – Kayla Upshaw, Molly Uffman, Leslie Britt and Kenya Hailey. Replacing these players is going to be a challenge. However, with a good nucleus of returning players they feel like they can be as good or better as last year’s team. This team will be led by senior shooting guard Kara Shutt and senior post player Kimberly Flippen. Coach Newton will need Kara Shutt to continue dropping in three’s and for Kimberly Flippen to be a force in the middle at 6’2”. The “Bees” Kayla Phifer and Breana Hardnett will be used to handle the ball, drive the lane and wreak havoc on opposing guards. Junior Yasmin Martin at 5’10” will be called on to give the Lady Falcons some inside rebounding and scoring.

This team is a very young with only two seniors, five juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen. Several of the young players do play travel basketball and are very experienced. This should allow them to transition quickly at the varsity level. Freshman Erin Jeffers and Jewel Tinsley both check in at 6’0” and could be a major factor a in the middle. Teara Johnson at 5’1” has good range and ball handling skills. Katie Lewis at 5’7” can do it all. Junior Emily Bray is another three point threat and Freshman Sarah Griffin and Erin Bradley both have great skills. Look for the Lady Falcons to have another outstanding season. The Lady Falcons are coached by Shawyn Newton, Dave Beasley and Rachel Clark.
