Grimsley @ Southwest – Boys Basketball Final

It was the Season opener tonight for the Cowboys of Southwest Guilford as they played hosts to the Whirlies of Grimsley High School. Southwest ended the Whirlies season in the opening round of the state playoffs last year and were hoping to exact a bit of revenge. The Cowboys are coming off a remarkable undefeated regular season last year and are wanting to prove that they still have plenty of talent to be just as competitive.

The game opened up with a pair of made free throws by each team, which turned out to be the theme of the game. The scoring was back and forth until a quick 7-0 spurt by the Cowboys got them up 12-4. The Whirlies would claw back cutting the deficit to 5 until a 3 pointer by Ben Ferguson just before the buzzer made the tally 17-9 at the close of the first stanza.

The second quarter was still back and forth but Grimsley gained momentum and even tied it up at 30. Following a pair of turnovers a bucket once again points just before the buzzer put the Cowboys up 32-30 closing an ugly half of basketball.

The second half finally had the Cowboys wake up as the upped the defensive pressure and outscored the Whirlies 17-6 in the third frame and cruised into the fourth with steals and open easy points to take a 76-55 victory in opening night.

Grimsley was led by John Puryear with 18 points. The Cowboys were led by KJ with 17 and 3 steals, Ben Ferguson with 14 and 3 Rebs, Tyliek Brister with 13, 4 Asts, and 4 Rebs, and Kam Langley with 13, 4 steals, and 2 Asts.
