College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 77, Greensboro 70 (overtime)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Kayla Adams (Rural Hall, N.C./North Forsyth) scored 12 of her season-high 16 points in overtime of Guilford College’s 77-70 basketball win at Greensboro College Saturday. Adams made all three of her three-point attempts in the extra period to help the Quakers (7-1) match their best start since 2007.

Greensboro (4-2) held an eight-point lead early in the second half, thanks in large part to Chevena Pickard, who scored 22 of her 25 points in the first half. Guilford clamped down on the senior in the second period and held her scoreless until overtime, which helped the Quakers back into the game. A 9-0 Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) run gave the Quakers a 36-35 lead with 17:39 left in the second half, its first since midway through the opening frame.

The game was tight from that point on as neither team led by more than three points. Gabby Oglesby’s (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor) two free throws with 2:15 left in regulation gave the Quakers a 60-58 edge, but Alicia Burr’s basket with 49 seconds left forced extra time. The Pride’s Kamia Strickland missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Adams took over in overtime, connecting on a three-pointer a minute into the extra frame, which opened a five-point Guilford lead. Greensboro answered with Burr’s traditional three-point play at the other end, but Adams knocked down her second trey of the game with 3:20 left. Her final three came with 48 seconds remaining and opened a 74-67 Guilford edge, its largest of the game.

Morgan King’s 17 points paced four Quakers in double-figure scoring. She also collected 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Oglesby also notched her second double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She netted nine points in the second half, which is when Drew scored all 16 of her markers.

Pickard’s 25 points led all scorers and she shared team-high honors with five rebounds. Shanita Hampton chipped in 17 points and a game-high seven assists. Burr finished with 10 points off the bench.

Guilford visits William Peace University Sunday (12/15) at 2:00 p.m.
