Greensboro College Women’s Basketball Outlasts Methodist 80-76 in OT

FAYETTEVILLE, NC—The Pride women’s basketball team defeated Methodist University 80-76 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in USA South play. Greensboro outscored their opponents 12-8 in overtime en route to their victory.

Greensboro had a few opportunities to win the game in regulation with six seconds remaining but came up short, with the game going into overtime tied at 68-68. In overtime, Methodist took an early 74-71 lead in the first three minutes. Greensboro however got on track using a 9-0 run down the stretch regaining the lead and holding off their opponents for the 80-76 victory.

To start the game, Greensboro used a 6-0 run before stretching the margin to 11-2 with 17:24 remaining. Methodist answered tying the game up at 11-11 with 10:32 to go, and led The Pride 20-15 with 5:58 showing on the board. Both teams then traded baskets, before Greensboro offense used a 9-0 run retaking a 29-24 lead with 1:35 to go. However, the Monarchs again answered with a 5-0 run taking a narrow 30-29 lead into the halftime break.

The second half saw The Pride start the same way with a 6-0 run retaking the lead at 37-32 with 17:42 to go. The Monarchs over the next four minuites came back taking a 44-43 lead with 13:30. Greensboro did not let the deficit last long, using a 8-0 run retaking the lead at 53-46 with 11:03. Over the next seven minutes Methodist had a 9-3 run tying the game up at 56-56 with 6:44 showing. The Monarchs pushed the lead to 66-60 with 2:32 to go but The Pride energized a 6-0 run to tie the game with 1:46 to go in regulation.

The Pride used strong defense on the afternoon forcing 40 turnovers, while having 24 steals. The offense shot 32.2 percent from the field.

Chevena Pickard led the way with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and nine steals. Joslyn Spires was close behind with 18 points, and a game high five assists. Shanita Hampton rounded it out with 16 points and five rebounds.

With the win, The Pride move to 10-4 overall, and 6-2 in USA South play. Greensboro will return to action when they face Averett University on Wednesday. The tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
