Women’s Basketball: Guilford 66, Randolph 61

GREENSBORO, N.C. – It was a sloppy game for the Quakers but Gabby Oglesby had a big night, one in which she tallied a double-double, to lead Guilford to a 66-61 win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Randolph Wednesday night at Ragan Brown Field House.

Despite Guilford College being closed due to winter weather, the doubleheader with Randolph went on as scheduled Wednesday. The Quakers looked out of sync early and quickly fell behind, 15-5.

A 14-4 run tied the game at 19, with Anais Weatherly contributing six points during the spurt.

The game see-sawed back and forth the rest of the half, with Randolph (9-9, 3-6 ODAC) taking a 28-25 lead into intermission.

Guilford (14-4, 6-3 ODAC) seemed to take control of the game early in the second half, thanks to a 14-1 run. A layup by Oglesby made it 39-32 Quakers but hot shooting kept Randolph in the game.

A three by Abigail Bullins made it 58-58 with 3:36 remaining.

Oglesby hit a free throw to give Guilford the lead and then she came up with a big block on the other end of the floor. A layup by Jeannette Taylor gave the Quakers a three-point advantage and Oglesby came up with another block to thwart the WildCats.

Morgan King and Kayla Adams each converted two free throws down the stretch and Guilford escaped with the win.

In addition to three blocks, Oglesby finished with a team-high 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.

While the Quakers had a poor shooting night, they survived thanks to a dominating performance on the glass. They finished with a 47-33 rebounding edge and their 25 offensive rebounds led to a 27-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Randolph kept in the game by shooting well against one of the best defensive clubs in Division III. The visitors hit 24-of-53 shots from the field. Allie Druffel finished with a game-high 22 points on 11-for-18 shooting, Bullins added 17 points and Chelsea Tyler chimed in with 15.

The Quakers return to action Saturday when they host ODAC-rival Bridgewater at 3:00 pm.
