25th Annual NCHSAA Dual Team Wrestling Championships Set For Saturday

Championships in four classifications will be decided Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 25th annual dual team wrestling championships.

The championships are held on high school campuses, alternating years between Eastern and Western sites. All of the teams advancing to the Saturday championship matches in 2-A, 3-A and 4-A earned a pair of victories on Thursday night to gain a shot at the state title, while the 1-A schools wrestled only the regional round with fewer schools in the tournament.

Both the 4-A and 3-A matches are repeats of last year’s finals.

Winston-Salem Parkland (51-0) seeks its eighth consecutive dual team title, with three at the 3-A level and then the last four 4-A crowns. The Mustangs will host Fayetteville Jack Britt for the 4-A championship.

Parkland has an incredible 56-8 record all-time in dual team wrestling playoff matches, in 18 appearances in the tournament. Parkland downed Britt a year ago for the title, 28-20.

The 3-A final sends Fred T. Foard (36-3) to Eden to face Morehead (37-1). Morehead has five previous NCHSAA dual team championships, with the last in 2006. Foard beat Morehead 41-27 in last year’s championship match.

Dixon (22-1) will travel from Onslow County to battle Newton-Conover (51-1). The host Red Devils are the defending dual team champions and are in the finals for the fifth time. Dixon eliminated last year’s runner-up, Newport Croatan, in the third round.

In the 1-A championship, Chatham Central (19-4) hosts Mitchell (36-7). Mitchell was the runner-up in the very first dual team championship in 1990 while Chatham Central was the 1-A/2-A champion in 2005.

West Wilkes had been the Western representative in the finals the previous five years, with four consecutive state titles.
