Elon Women’s Tennis Phoenix Looks For First Win Against North Carolina Central

ELON, N.C. – With inclement weather in the forecast, the Elon University women’s tennis team has altered its schedule for Saturday, Feb. 8.

Instead of taking on Norfolk State at 9:30 a.m. and North Carolina Central at 1:30 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, the Phoenix will only play North Carolina Central at 2 p.m. with the hopes of making up the match against Norfolk State at a later date.

ELON vs. NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL: In three previous matches with the Eagles, Elon has taken each of them by a score of 7-0. The last time the Phoenix took on North Carolina Central was the second match of the 2010 season. The Eagles and Phoenix battled each other three years in a row from 2008 to 2010 before taking a three-year break.

TOUGH START: Each of Elon’s first four matches of the season came on the road against highly-ranked opponents in No. 54 Virginia Tech, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Georgia and No. 55 Kansas State. Entering play this weekend, Elon’s previous four opponents hold a combined record of 14-4.

LOOKING BACK: Last time Elon took the courts was Jan. 25 in Athens, Ga. against Kansas State. After dropping the doubles point, Elon battled back to take a 3-2 lead with two singles matches remaining. The Wildcats pulled each of those matches out, including winning a tiebreaker in the third set on court No. 5 to take the match 4-3.

LOOKING AHEAD: Next time out, Elon will continue its eight-match homestand Wednesday, Feb. 12, against Campbell at 1:30 p.m. Then the Phoenix welcomes UNC Wilmington two days later on Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m.
