College Softball Finals: Guilford 15 – 4, Methodist 3 – 1

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—Guilford College opened its 2014 season with a doubleheader sweep over Methodist University Sunday Afternoon. The Quakers took game one, 15-3, in six innings while earning the victory in game two, 4-1.

Brooks Bray (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) led the Quakers in game one with three RBI, including a RBI-double in the top of the sixth inning after taking a walk to drive in the first run of the top of the fifth inning. Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) went four-for-five and drove in two runs on two separate RBI-singles in the fifth and sixth inning. Laura Hall drove in two runs on a RBI-double in the top of the sixth inning while Rachel Howard added two more RBI. The Quakers pulled away in the sixth with a seven-run rally to secure the game one win.

Maggie Shafer (1-0) picked up the complete-game win, surrendering no earned runs on four hits while striking out three batters in six innings.

Methodist held the lead, 1-0, for the first four innings thanks to a Allyson Aycock sacrifice fly to right field.

The Quakers would respond in the top of fifth inning with a four-run rally when Howard reached on an error at first base. Marty Wilcox would then single up the middle to claim the lead, 2-1. Taylor Boyd added to the lead with a single and an error to left field, bringing two runs across home plate.

Rebekah Langston (1-0) earned her first collegiate win surrendering no earned runs on five hits, striking out three batters in the seven inning complete-game win.

The Quakers open their 2014 home schedule Wednesday, hosting Greensboro College at Haworth Field for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
