Elon’s Stalzer Snares SoCon Baseball Pitcher of the Week Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — After two starts in which he did not allow an earned run in 14.0 innings, Elon baseball pitcher Jake Stalzer has been selected as the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for games played between Feb. 17-23.

Stalzer, a junior who transferred to Elon from Indian Hills Community College, made two starts during the week and went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. In his debut in the maroon and gold, Stalzer tossed seven innings and allowed just one unearned run on six hits in a victory over Cincinnati on Monday. He followed that up with another seven-inning start in a win over Wagner on Sunday. Against Wagner, Stalzer gave up just three hits and struck out three while keeping the Seahawks scoreless. Sunday’s outing began with him allowing a single to the leadoff hitter. Wagner would not record another hit until there were two outs in the seventh.

The performance of Stalzer has helped the Phoenix get off to a 5-1 start in 2014, the program’s best opening to a year since winning the first 10 games of the 2008 campaign.

Elon will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 by playing host to UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m. It is Pack Latham Park Day and tickets for this game are just $1.
