Elon Women’s Golf Phoenix Places 10th in Opening Spring Tournament

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — Competing in the largest NCAA Division I golf tournament in the nation, the Elon women’s golf squad opened its spring season by placing 10th at the Kiawah Classic hosted by College of Charleston on Tuesday. The Phoenix put together a three-day score of 920 (301-315-304).

Elon was led by Sunna Vidisdottir who placed in a tie for 17th among the 192 players in the field with a score of 226 (75-76-75). Over her three rounds, Vidisdottir was one of two players to record 41 pars, the most in the field. She had one birdie during her final round of play.

In a tie for 33rd with a mark of 229 (74-79-76) was Emily Brooks. Brooks notched two birdies over her final 18 holes of the tournament. Over her final 12 holes, Brooks birdied one and posted par on the 11 others.

Kelsey Badmaev’s score of 232 (75-79-78) placed her in a tie for 45th. Badmaev had three birdies and nine pars over her last round of the tournament.

With a three-round total of 233 (77-81-75), Katie Partridge placed in a tie for 53rd. Partridge posted a par on her first nine holes of her final round. She also had one birdie on the day.

Finally, Taylor Wilkerson finished in a tie for 158th with a score of 259 (88-83-88).

Playing as an individual, Kathryn Buckingham tied for 90th with a 239 (77-77-85).

Medalist honors were shared by Boston College’s Katia Joo (72-73-75) and Kent State’s Wad Phaewchimplee (69-81-70) with a score of 220.

Kent State, ranked 37th nationally, claimed the team title with a three-day score of 892 (292-302-298). The remainder of the top five consisted of Penn State (906), High Point (907), Chattanooga (908) and Jacksonville State (910).

Along with Elon and UTC, SoCon schools Samford (12th, 922), UNCG (26th, 981) and The Citadel (33rd, 1020) were also in the 36-team field.

The Elon women will be back on the links at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., beginning March 14.
