College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 12, Greensboro 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Adam Fiore (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) scored three goals and Juquan Tellis added two goals and two assists in Guilford College’s 12-7 lacrosse win over visiting Greensboro College Monday night.

The victory moved Guilford’s record to 5-0 for the first time in school history. Greensboro drops to 1-4.

The Quakers grabbed a 6-0 lead before the Pride’s Mike Bates got a shot past Guilford goalie Thomas Deane (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue (Ohio Wesleyan)) 7:38 before halftime. Guilford’s Duncan Fitzgerald started the game-opening run with the first two goals and Fiore ended it with a quick strike off a Tellis feed 8:13 before intermission.

Deane sparkled throughout the night in the face of Greensboro’s 55-shot barrage. The junior made a season-high 19 saves, five each in the first, second and third quarters. He also matched his career high with six ground balls.

While Deane was stonewalling the free-shooting Pride, Guilford’s shooters picked apart his counterpart, Greensboro Jesse Duczeminskyi. The Florida freshman made three saves in his third start in place of injured starter C.J. Meinhardt. The Quakers took just 28 shots, 15 of which were on goal. Eight different Quakers scored, including junior Chandler Zirkle (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), who notched his first goal of 2014 with a first-quarter blast five minutes into the contest. Teammate Dylan Haupt (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) added a game-high two assists.

While Greensboro enjoyed a few long possessions with multiple shots, the Quakers’ defense limited the Pride’s quality scoring chances. Long pole Nick Huckins forced three Greensboro miscues and linemate Matt Dunbar had two caused turnovers. The pair combined for nine ground balls, which helped the Quakers to a 34-25 edge in the category.

After trailing 7-1 at the break, Greensboro showed some third-quarter spark and scored four of the second half’s first six goals. The Quakers regained momentum and netted three straight scores to take a 12-5 edge into the final quarter.

Alexander Vander hof scored twice for the Pride, including one of the team’s two man-up goals in the second half. Charles Stringfellow had a goal and two assists off the bench.

Guilford received votes in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Coaches’ Poll for the first time in recent history today. Coach Tom Carmean’s club visits 12th-ranked Lynchburg College Saturday (3/15) in the Quakers’ Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener.
