College Football News – Guilford Announces First Six Students in 2018 Recruiting Class

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College head football coach Chris Rusiewicz announced the intention of the six incoming students to play football for the Quakers Monday. The students have made their deposits to the college and will enroll for classes beginning in August. They are the first commitments of Rusiewicz’s fourth recruiting class at Guilford.

Lane Daniels (Paintsville, Ky.) lettered all four years at Paintsville High School under head coach Joseph Anthony Chirico. The 5-10, 190-pound wide receiver/linebacker earned First Team All-Mountain Preps recognition as a senior and was picked to the Kentucky All-Star unit that played Tennessee in the 2014 National Guard Border Bowl. Daniels was named to the Independent’s 2013 Small School All-Area Team. In both of his final two seasons, he led the Tigers in tackles, interceptions, receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches. Daniels also played basketball and baseball at Paintsville and intends to study sports medicine at Guilford.

Steven Gordon, Jr. (Greensboro, N.C.) lettered three years at nearby Western Guilford High School under head coach Chris Causey. A 6-1, 240-pound two-way lineman, he earned academic all-conference recognition in both football and basketball. Gordon made 56 tackles as a senior and plans to study sport management at Guilford.

Kendall Huss (Bessemer City, N.C.) lettered two years at Bessemer City under head coach Larry Boone. The 6-0, 205-pound tight end/linebacker and recorded four sacks among 77 tackles as a senior. Bessemer City went 6-6 in 2013, shared the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference title and reached the state playoffs. As a junior, Huss led the Yellow Jackets with 89 tackles and three sacks. He intends to study criminal justice at Guilford.

Christian Miles (Burlington, N.C.) lettered four years at Walter Williams High School under coach David Green. The 6-0, 165-pound quarterback earned All-Mid-State 3A Conference recognition, was named the Bulldogs’ most outstanding back and helped Williams to the 2013 state playoffs. A team captain, Miles completed 51 percent of his career passes for 2,015 yards and 19 touchdowns. He threw the longest touchdown pass in school history (91 yards) in 2011. As a senior Miles ran for 668 yards and 11 touchdowns on 150 carries. Also a three-year baseball letter winner, Miles plans to study environmental science at Guilford.

Charles Nash III (Charlotte, N.C.) lettered two years at Charlotte Christian High School under head coach Jason Estep. The 5-8, 195-pound linebacker was named to the All-North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association Division I All-State and All-Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association teams in both his junior and senior years. Charlotte Christian won two state titles during Nash’s tenure and went 12-0 in 2013. He served as a defensive team captain and hopes to study accounting at Guilford.

Cole Weaver (Durham, N.C.) lettered three years at Riverside High School under head coach David Hackney. The 6-2, 235-pound offensive lineman earned All-Piedmont Athletic Conference 6 recognition and served as team captain. As a senior, Weaver had 47 pancake blocks and helped the Pirates to an 8-4 record and their first playoff berth in seven years.

The Quakers finished with a 6-4 overall record (5-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference), their best since 2007, last fall. Guilford could return as many as 18 starters from that team and opens the 2014 campaign against Greensboro College in the Gate City Soup Bowl Sept. 6.
