Ray Crawford’s Late Inning Heroic Hits Propel Rams Over Falcons, 5-4

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State Rams scored all of their runs over the last three innings, en route to a 5-4 win over the St. Augustine’s Falcons on Sunday morning at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem.

With the win, Winston-Salem State moves to 17-9 overall and 8-3 in the CIAA, while St. Augustine’s drops to 9-18 overall and 3-4 in the CIAA.

St. Augustine’s jumped out on the Rams early, as they were able to score the game’s first run in the very first inning. They would tack on two more runs in the top of the fourth, to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

But Winston-Salem State would fight back in the inning, beginning with a walk by Colby Keane, followed by a Rafael Gonzalez single to center field. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Devin McLemore would bring them home on a line drive single through the middle. Leland Clemmons would bring McLemore home on a hit and throwing error, to tie the game at 3-3.

After two walks started the inning for the Falcons, WSSU would go to the bullpen and bring in Eric Corlett, but the answered right back in the fifth when Jason Baytop reached on an error that allowed Calvin Butcher to score, giving the Falcons back the lead at 4-3.

It wouldn’t take long for WSSU to tie the game, as the first batter of the inning, Ray Crawford, hit a towering home run to deep left field and knot the game at 4-4.

Ray Crawford would strike again in the bottom of the sixth inning, as he would single to right field and score Anthony Nutall to give the Rams their first lead of the day at 5-4.

St. Augustine’s would be sat down one, two and three in the seventh to give Winston-Salem State the win.

For the Rams, Ray Crawford finished two for four with a home run and a run scored. He also knocked in two runs, and Devin McLemore also drove in two runs, finishing one for two with a run scored. Rafael Gonzalez went two for three on the day with a run scored. Leland Clemmons was one for three with a run batted in, and Colby Keane and Anthony Nutall both went one for one with a run scored.

Ryan Mayhew started for WSSU and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, of which three were earned. He also struck out two while walking two. Eric Corlett came on in relief and pitched 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings to pick up the win.

The final game of the four game series was postponed to a later date, as the rain moved in to prevent the game from being played.

Winston-Salem State will host Kutztown University on Wednesday, with the double header action starting at 5:00 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark.
