Danny Manning is the new head basketball coach for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons….
‘The Manning’ has landed and he has landed back in area where he grew up….
Long before there was ‘Danny and Miracles’ at Kansas, where he led the Jayhawks to the 1988 NCAA Championship, Danny lived in an apartment complex over off of Lawndale Drive, just about 3 miles from where I am sitting right now….
Danny led the Page Pirates to the 1983 NCHSAA 4-A title in his junior year on Alma Pinnix Drive in Greensboro and then left out for Lawrence, Kansas….
His dad Ed Manning played for the old Carolina Cougars American Basketball Association team here in Greensboro and after his playing for the Cougars ended, Ed was a truck driver….
And then Ed became an assistant coach for Larry Brown at Kansas, all made possible from their connections when Brown and Ed Manning were together in the ABA and it didn’t hurt one bit that Ed had a son named Danny, that would go on to lead many into the promised land….
Danny hit Kansas, and that was all after the Greensoboro Page stop and then after Kansas it was on to the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA, he got a bronze medal along with one of the Dream Teams in the Olympic games, he made his way back to Kansas and became an top assistant coach for the Jayhawks and then he spread his Jayhawk wings and became the head coach at Tulsa…..
Danny went 38-29 in two seasons at Tulsa and took his team into post-season play both years…..
Now Danny has been named the head coach at Wake Forest and they are talking 2 million dollars a year for his services….
Danny Manning, from Page High School, taking over the Demon Deacon duties….
You go back to that apartment complex over off of Lawndale Drive and you look it over and you might not have ever dreamed what could have come off that outdoor court where the kids used to play pickup basketball games…..
Danny and the miracles never cease to happen…….
