College Men’s Tennis Final – Guilford 8, Emory & Henry 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s men’s tennis team downed visiting Emory & Henry College, 8-1, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match at the McMichael Centennial Class Courts Sunday.

The Quakers (5-8, 4-4 ODAC) swept the three doubles matches and won five of six singles contests. Junior captain Turner Votipka was one of four two-time winners on the afternoon. He teamed with Erik Meiler for an 8-4 first-doubles win over the Wasps’ Alex Minasyan and John Ferguson before downing Minasyan in a third-set tie break, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Trevor Cox and Aaron Smedley teamed for an 8-1 second-doubles win over Emory & Henry’s Luke Funkhauser and Kamil Aliev. Cox topped Aliev, 6-3, 6-4, at third singles and Smedley knocked off Johnathan Romano, 6-1, 6-1, in the fourth-singles contest.

Mason Church and Levi Bruff were 8-3 winners over Romano and Eric Logan at third doubles. Church defeated Logan, 6-2, 6-1, at fifth singles.

Ferguson downed Blake Brown, 6-3, 6-3, at second singles for Emory & Henry (3-11, 1-6 ODAC).

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers visit league-rival Randolph-Macon College Monday (4/7) in a match rescheduled from March.
