College Men’s Tennis Final – Randolph-Macon 5, Guilford 4

ASHLAND, Va. – Host Randolph-Macon College pulled out a hard-fought 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s tennis decision over Guilford College Monday. The victory extended the Yellow Jackets’ (10-6, 7-2 ODAC) winning streak to seven.

The Quakers (6-10, 5-5 ODAC) opened by scoring two narrow doubles wins. Turner Votipka and Erik Meiler edged the Yellow Jackets’ Ryan Byrd and Michael Baxter, 8-6. Guilford’s Levi Bruff and Mason Church pulled out an 8-5 victory at third doubles over Randolph-Macon’s Connor Hoerr and Ira Usry.

John Adam and Brantley Stein scored the Yellow Jackets’ doubles point with an 8-6 victory over Guilford’s Trevor Cox and Aaron Smedley.

Five of the six singles matches went three sets and six of the sets required tiebreaks. Votipka and Cox overcame second-set losses to post three-set wins at first and third singles, respectively. The Yellow Jackets claimed the bottom three singles matches, with Usry’s 6-2, 6-4 win over Bruff at sixth singles the lone straight-set decision.

Guilford’s Smedley courageously fought through cramps in the second and third set of his fourth-singles contest with Adam, but fell 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 5-7.

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers await the announcement of the ODAC Tournament, which begins this weekend.
