College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 16, Methodist 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Adam Fiore (Ithaca. N.Y./Ithaca) scored a career-high 11 points in Guilford College’s 16-7 lacrosse win over visiting Methodist University Tuesday night. Fiore tallied four goals and seven assists to match the sixth-highest single-game scoring total in school history. His seven assists rank fourth on the Quakers’ single-game list.

Guilford (7-6) led 11-0 at halftime and score the game’s first 13 goals before Chris Lombardi (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) got the first-year Monarchs (3-9) on the board. The score remained 13-1 after three quarters and Methodist won the final quarter, 6-3.
Fiore had a hand in all but two of the Quakers’ first 11 goals and played a part in 11 of the 16 tallies overall. He scored twice and assisted on five goals in the second quarter alone. His 11 points mark the most by a Quakers since Josh Miller ’04 totaled 12 points in a 2004 win over Shenandoah University.

Juquan Tellis, Chase Clausen, Daniel Hughey (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) and Chandler Zirkle (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) each scored twice for Guilford, which enjoyed a 49-27 edge in shots. Jace Sowden contributed a goal and two assists in the win. Connor Manning (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) won 15-of-21 face-offs for Guilford and collected a game- and career-high nine ground balls. Thomas Deane made one save in 30 minutes of shutout play in goal. Garrison Goth (4) and Jacob Broome (3) combined for seven second-half saves.

Matt Layden paced Methodist with two goals and an assist. His twin brother, Justin, added an assist, plus a team-best six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalie Travis Rice made nine saves in three quarters of work.

The Quakers resume their Old Dominion Athletic Conference schedule Saturday (4/19) when visiting Shenandoah comes to Appenzeller Field in the Armfield Athletic Center.
