Elon Men Open SoCon Golf Championship Play

PINEHURST, N.C. – Sunday marked the opening round of the 2014 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the National Golf Club and the Elon program opened its tournament by shooting a 316 to sit in 10th place.

Elon’s leader on day one was Will DiIanni who shot a one-over par 73 to hold a share of seventh place in the 50-player field. He finished his round with four birdies, tied for the second-highest total in the field on the first day of competition.

John Somers, who had three birdies, was the second-best finisher for the Phoenix on Sunday. Somers shot a first-round 78 to tie for 34th.

In a tie for 41st is Stuart Kaufman who posted an 81 over his first 18 holes. He is followed by Troy Beaver who carded an 84 to sit in a tie for 48th.

Finally, Jonathan DiIanni posted an 88 on day one and sits 50th.

Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston, the 16th-ranked player in the nation, leads the individual field after shooting a four-under 68 on Sunday. He was one of four players to have sub-par rounds after 18 holes.

Both Davidson and Western Carolina shot a 294 on day one to hold the team lead. The pair leads Furman and 47th-rated Georgia Southern by two strokes with two rounds to play.
