Wildcats Push Past Elon Baseball Phoenix to Even Series

ELON, N.C. — A day after rallying for a victory over Davidson, the Elon baseball team saw the Wildcats do the exact same thing to it on Saturday afternoon as Davidson claimed a 9-2 victory over the Phoenix. The two will play the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Elon’s Senior Day.

Elon (26-20, 12-11 Southern Conference) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Chris King doubled home Casey Jones and then scored on a Tyler McVicar double.

Davidson (26-14, 16-5) came right back and plated five in the second. The Wildcats loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk before a second walk forced in the first run. That was followed by a two-RBI double down the third base line off the bat of Daniel Gerow as Davidson took a 3-2 lead. A ground out and sac fly allowed the final two runs of the inning to cross the plate.

In both the third and ninth, Davidson tacked on a pair of runs.

Jones continued to swing a hot bat as he went 2-for-2 with three walks on the day to up his average to a SoCon-best .411. He has had at least one hit in 31 of his last 32 games.

The loss went to Michael Elefante (6-3) who was charged with five runs on four hits in just two innings. Matt Harris kept the Phoenix in the game as he went seven innings, striking out seven hitters. Davidson got four runs off of Harris, only two of which were earned.

Danny Mooney (5-3) picked up the win after allowing two runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings.

Prior to Sunday’s finale, Elon will recognize five seniors – Jacob Baker, Grant Fisher, Sebastian Gomez, Sam Paone and Ryan Pennell.
