GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College head football coach Chris Rusiewicz announced the intention of six new incoming students who intend to play football for the Quakers on Wednesday. The six have made their deposits to the college and will enroll in classes beginning in August. The group of commitments increases Rusiewicz’s fourth recruiting class to 24 students.
Zack Dernbach (Mebane, N.C.) lettered two years at Eastern Alamance High School under head coach John Kirby. The 5-9, 190-pound linebacker back was named to the All-Mid-State Conference Academic Team all four years of his career. The outside linebacker earned honorable mention all-conference recognition in 2013 and helped the Eagles to the third round of the state playoffs for the second straight season. He made 99 tackles and two interceptions in 14 games as a senior. Dernbach intends to study exercise and sport sciences while at Guilford.
Devin Henderson Jr. (Cartersville, Ga.) lettered all four years under head coach Frank Barden at Cartersville High School. The 5-8, 150-pound defensive back was an all-region and All-Bartow County selection. Henderson finished his senior season with five interceptions. He had four thefts as a junior and helped his team to consecutive regional championships in 2012 and 2013. Henderson is a member of his school’s Student Athlete Council and earned a spot on the Georgia High School Football 3AAA All-Academic Team. He also lettered in basketball and track, and plans to study exercise and sport sciences at Guilford.
Jordan Johnson (Archdale, N.C.) lettered three years at Trinity High School under head coach Clayton Trivett. The 6-2, 310-pound defensive lineman earned All-Piedmont Athletic Conference 6 recognition three times and was an All-Randolph County honoree as a junior. The three-sport athlete also led his basketball team to the 2014 league title and the fourth round of the state 2A playoffs. He also threw the shot put and discus for the track and field team. Johnson intends to study exercise and sport sciences at Guilford.
Zavious Mack (Lexington, N.C) lettered three years at Reagan High School under head coach Josh McGee. The 6-0, 295-pound offensive/defensive lineman was a three-sport athlete who also lettered in basketball and track and field, where he mostly handled the shot put. The two-way lineman is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Tech Honor Society. He has also received Guilford’s Eugene H. Thompson Scholarship. He plans to study health sciences while at Guilford.
Ty Montgomery (Taylors, S.C.) lettered three years at Blue Ridge High School under head coach Shane Clark. As a junior, the 5-11, 175-pound quarterback earned All-South Carolina, All-Greenville County, and All-Peach Blossom Conference recognition. He was named the team’s Offensive Back of the Year all four years at Blue Ridge and a 2014 all-conference selection. Montgomery won the Greenville Touchdown Club Player of the Week Award three times during his high school career. He also earned all-league honors as a catcher and pitcher on the baseball team in 2013. His father, Mike, pitched a season of minor-league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization after playing collegiately at East Tennessee State University. Montgomery plans to study sport management at Guilford.
Patrick Volk (Durham, N.C.) lettered three years at Riverside High School under head coach David Hackney. The 5-10, 265-pound two-way lineman earned All-Piedmont Athletic Conference 6 recognition as an offensive guard in 2013. Volk twice received honorable mention all-league honors at defensive tackle.
The Quakers finished the 2013 season with a 6-4 overall record, their best since 2007. Guilford could return as many as 18 starters and opens the 2014 campaign against cross-town rival Greensboro College in the Gate City Soup Bowl Sept. 6.
