THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Kyle Hamner drilled a three-run double in the top of the eighth Wednesday that proved to be the difference as the High Point-Thomasville HiToms fell to the Asheboro Copperheads 3-1.
High Point-Thomasville (12-17, 0-1) jumped out in front in the bottom of the second inning. Glenn Batson (rs fr., Clemson) ripped a RBI double to left field and Spencer Mahoney (jr., Valparaiso) followed him with a RBI single to center giving the HiToms a 2-0 lead.
Asheboro’s Connor Owings split the lead in half with a solo homer to right field in the top of the sixth inning, but the HiToms’ Austin Crutcher (jr., Bellarmine) answered in the bottom half with a solo shot of his own extending the HiToms’ lead 3-1.
In the top the eighth, an error, fielder’s choice and walk loaded the bases for Asheboro (13-16, 1-1) with two out. Then, Copperheads designated hitter Kyle Hamner lined a bases-clearing double to right giving Asheboro a 4-3 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Copperheads starting pitcher Trevor Richards pitched all nine innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits with a walk and five punchouts for his fourth win of the season. The HiToms’ Laetten Galbraith (rs jr., Louisiana Tech – 1-1) took the loss in relief.
The HiToms look to bounce back Thursday as they travel to Sims Legion Park to face the Gastonia Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
