With a single into left-center field, Evan Edwards(Southern Guilford) scored Zach McLean(High Point Christian) from second base in the bottom of the ninth to win 9-8 on Thursday at Finch Field and cap an incredible comeback to beat Kernersville Post 36 in the second round of the Area III playoffs three games to two.

“It feels great,” said center fielder Levi Gesell(High Point Christian), who tied the game with a two-run single in the ninth. “It takes heart to do that when you’re down two games to zero and you’re missing three players who start. So, it takes a lot of guts.

Trailing 8-6 in the back-and-forth game, the HiToms started the ninth with No. 2 hitter, Colin Rosenbaum. He and the next batter, Ryan Hedrick(Southern Guilford), reached on infield errors. Then, McLean singled to load the bases – all with no outs.

Gesell then singled up the middle to score Rosenbaum and Hedrick. Finally, Edwards took an 0-1 pitch into the left-center field gap. McLean, who was at second, paused momentarily to make sure the ball would drop, raced for third and scored easily, sparking a wild celebration.

Gesell led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Edwards had two hits and one RBI. McLean also had two RBIs, while Hayden Manuel and Rosenbaum each had two hits, including a double. Ryan Caveness(Southern Guilford) also had an RBI.

Bump Martin(McMichael) had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs to lead the Devil Dogs, who also scored three in the fourth to lead 3-2. Mason Striplin(Glenn) also had three hits, including a double, and one RBI. Drew Wilson added two hits and an RBI.

Trevor Gay(High Point Central) got the win in three innings of relief, while Wilson took the loss in four innings of relief.
