College Volleyball Results – Guilford Splits at Cougar Classic

DANVILLE, Va. – Guilford College’s volleyball team split its final two matches Sunday at the Averett University Cougar Classic. The Quakers (1-3) opened the day with a 3-1 win over Methodist University before falling to the host Cougars by the same score.

Junior Kelsey Ruehling hit .324 with a team-high 14 kills in the Quakers’ 25-22, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22 victory over Methodist. Senior Michaela Wall chipped in with 12 kills and Becca Benfield added 10 putaways on .474 hitting for Guilford. Benfield also served up four aces. Maile Munro served up 38 assists and Brooke Herr added 15 digs.

Averett’s Hannah Shields drove home a match-high 23 kills and hit .372 for the Cougars in Guilford’s second match. Averett pulled out a narrow 27-25 opening-set win and went up, 2-0, with a 25-9 victory in the second. Guilford claimed the third set, 25-22, before the Cougars clinched with a 25-10 win. The Cougars served up 12 aces in the match, paced by setter Nicole Barringer with five. She also set up 38 assists and had seven digs.

Ruehling paced Guilford with 11 putaways and also had eight digs. Benfield and Wall both added six kilss apiece. Munro contributed 29 assists and Herr paced the defense with nine digs.

Coach Emily Gann’s team plays at the Greensboro College Invitational next weekend, starting with a match versus the host Pride Sept. 6 at 10:00 a.m.
