GC Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Greensboro Invitational

The Pride volleyball team kicked off day two of the Greensboro invitational by falling to Piedmont University 3-0. In the final game of the invitational, Greensboro defeated Hollins University 3-1. Following the contest Liz Widenhouse was honored to the all tournament team.

In the first set, with The Pride trailing 10-7, Greensboro used a 4-0 run taking an 11-10 lead. Piedmont responded back regaining a 12-11 lead but the Pride again mounted a 3-0 spree retaking a 14-13 lead. Both teams traded points down the stretch with Piedmont pulling away late for the 25-20 set win.

A back and forth second set until the Lions took a 16-11 lead, that forced Greensboro to charge back tying the match at 18-18 with a 7-1 run. The two teams tied the match twice down the stretch but the Lions took a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead. Piedmont followed up by winning the third set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Liz Widenhouse led the way with 11 kills and 12 digs. Dallas Hasty was close behind with nine kills and 12 digs. Darrian Bolt had a team high 16 assists while Bari Tressler had 14.

In set one of their second match of the day, Greensboro jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to kills by Freshman Shayla Moss and Senior Liz Widenhouse. After the score was 5-2 in favor of Hollins, aiding in the run was Widenhouse having three kills to lift The Pride to 7-5 lead. From there, a back and forth contest was at hand for the rest of the set as The Pride use a 4-0 run to take the set 25-17.

Another close set was in store during set two as The Pride would face a 7-3 deficit before running off a 9-2 stretch taking a 12-9 lead. However, Hollins went on to take the set 25-19, tying the match 1-1.

In a seesaw third set, Greensboro went on a 6-1 run after being down 10-6, making the score 12-11. A quick three point run to follow that gave The Pride a 15-13 advantage. From there, both teams would not allow a difference of three points, as Greensboro took set three 25-21.

Set four also started in close fashion until Greensboro went on a 8-2 run pushing out in front 20-14 forcing Hollins University to take a timeout during the stretch. The Pride would not surrender the lead and go on to take set four 25-22, winning the match 3-1 over Hollins University.

Leading the way for Greensboro was Captain Liz Widenhouse tallying 20 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Shayla Moss had 12 kills along with 8 digs, while Junior Megan Baranko collected 11 kills and 7 digs. Assists for The Pride were led by setter Darrian Bolt with 40 assists in the match.

The Pride volleyball improves to 5-4 overall on the season with a split on day two of the Greensboro College Invitational.

“We are happy with the way the team played this weekend,” Coach Pike said. “Every player contributed in a positive manner and we are looking forward to carrying this momentum into our match on Wednesday against Montreat.”

The Pride returns to action when they travel to Montreat College on Wednesday September 10. The game is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
