High Point Volleyball Loses to UNC Wilmington on Saturday

• Freshman Haley Barnes led High Point with 11 kills.
• High Point is four games in to a six-game stretch against in-state opponents.
• The Panthers wrap up the Davidson Wildcat Classic tonight at 7 p.m. against Davidson.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The High Point University volleyball team lost to UNC Wilmington in straight sets on Saturday at the Davidson Wildcat Classic. Freshman Haley Barnes led HPU with 11 kills in the match.

Barnes hit .333 with 11 kills to lead the HPU offense. Freshman Camryn Freiberg was second on the team with eight kills and two blocks. Junior Gabi Mirand dished out 29 assists with seven digs and one block. Junior Wavie Chin had a match-high 18 digs.

UNC Wilmington outhit HPU .400 to .024 in the first set to pick up a 25-11 victory. The Seahawks opened the second set with a quick 10-4 run. HPU closed the gap and tied the frame 18-18 on a kill from Barnes. UNCW scored the next two points to swing the lead back in its favor and held on to win the set 25-23.

HPU got within one of the Seahawks five times in the middle of the match, finally at 12-13 on a kill from Megan Kennedy. UNC Wilmington pulled away with 5-1 run to take a 18-13 lead. The Seahawks maintained the lead for the rest of the frame winning 25-20 and taking the match 3-0.

High Point (2-6) takes on host-team Davidson at 7 p.m. in the final game of the Davidson Wildcat Clasic.
