College Volleyball Final – Greensboro 3, Guilford 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior hitter Liz Widenhouse had 27 kills and helped visiting Greensboro College rally past Guilford College, 3-2, in a nonconference volleyball match Tuesday night at Ragan-Brown Field House.

Guilford (3-12) won two of the first three sets and held a 23-20 edge in the fourth before the Pride scored five unanswered points to force a decisive fifth set. Widenhouse put away six kills in the finale, including three early in the frame, which helped the Pride (12-6) open a 7-2 lead.

Guilford chipped away and trimmed the deficit to 12-9 before a 4-1 Quakers’ flurry knotted the score at 13-13. Widenhouse answered with two kills over the next three points and served for the match with the Pride leading, 15-14. After a brief rally, Greensboro’s Shayla Moss tipped a ball over Guilford’s blockers for her 15th kill of the night, which lifted the Pride to their eighth win in 10 outings.

Widenhouse hit .286 and also chipped in three service aces, 16 digs, and two blocks. Moss notched 13 digs for a double-double and Dallas Hasty contributed 11 kills on .300 hitting. Greensboro’s Bari Tressler and Darrian Bolt both finished with 30 assists.

Guilford’s Taylor Creed (Randleman, N.C./Southern Guilford) paced the Quakers with a career-high 14 kills. Sophomore Becca Benfield enjoyed a career night with 10 putaways on .318 hitting, plus a match- and career-high six blocks. Casey Davis (Thomasville, N.C./Trinity) registered 37 assists, a personal best, and also had five blocks and 17 digs. Ruehling’s 19 digs paced Guilford’s defense. She also had eight kills.

Coach Emily Gann’s team heads to Harrisonburg, Virginia, Saturday (10/4) for a tri-match at Eastern Mennonite University that also includes Bluefield College.
