GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tobias Andreasson’s goal with 15 seconds left in the final overtime lifted Averett University past Guilford College, 2-1, Wednesday night.
The Cougars broke the stalemate of a tightly played first half when Martin Karemalm played a deflected ball off the post and into the net for the early lead.
Both teams played an even second half with the second half shot count even, 5-5, before Guilford’s Jake Elsey received a pass from Angel Valencia (Greensboro, N.C./Westchester Country Day) 20 yards away from the 18-yard box to tie the game, 1-1, with 2:08 remaining.
After a first overtime period where Guilford held the only shot, the Quakers held a 7-0 shot advantage in the second overtime until Andreasson’s goal gave the Cougars the advantage.
The Quakers outshot the Cougars, 23-8, while holding the edge on corner kicks, 13-5.
Marko Mandalinic made three saves in net for the Quakers. Averett’s Martin Erenstedt stopped six shots.
The Quakers (4-7, 3-1 ODAC) return to action Saturday when Guilford travels to Randolph College for a 5 p.m. contest Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest.
