HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men’s soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Longwood and held on for a 3-2 win on Saturday night at Vert Stadium. Senior Mamadee Nyepon scored two goals in the win for HPU.

“I thought this group was up for the game tonight – they knew it was a conference game and that we needed to leave with the full three points,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “The game did not go to script tonight. When you are up 2-0, you need to do a better job protecting the lead. Longwood put up a good fight and got two goals back so we were very happy to get that third goal and the win.”

Nyepon tallied his first goal of the night in the 15th minute with a header to put the Panthers ahead, 1-0. High Point earned a corner kick and junior Austin Yearwood delivered a ball from the right side to the far post. Nyepon cut inside his marker and headed the ball into the net for his eighth goal of the season.

The Panthers doubled their lead in the 56th minute when Nyepon scored his second goal of the night to put HPU ahead by a 2-0 margin. Nyepon received a square ball from redshirt-sophomore Pat Shelton and hammered a shot towards the net from 25-yards out. The shot took a deflection and wrong-footed the keeper, sailing into the back of the net.

Longwood got a goal back just 10 minutes later on a header by Michael Margulis to make the score 2-1. The Lancers earned a free kick in the offensive third and Dan Campos hit a ball into the box. Margulis redirected the ball with a glancing header for the goal.

The Lancers tied the game with a penalty kick by Jonathan Majin in the 73rd minute after a HPU handball in the box, but the Panthers came right back one minute later to retake the lead on a goal by sophomore Chris Ramsell. Yearwood delivered a throughball to freshman Ebe Kudolo who flicked it back to Ramsell. The sophomore took a touch along the top of the box before beating the Lancer keeper with a low shot to the right.

Freshman David Price earned his third win in goal for the Panthers, improving to 3-1-0 on the season. Longwood’s Carl Carpenter made four saves in his first start of the season and moved to 0-1-0.

High Point finished with a 10-6 edge in shots and put seven of its 10 attempts on frame. The Panthers also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.

HPU stays undefeated in conference play at 3-0-0 with the win over the Lancers and is now 5-4-1 overall. Longwood drops to 1-8-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the Big South.

The Panthers will leave conference play on Tuesday, Oct. 14, when they travel to Blacksburg, Virginia to play Virginia Tech out of the ACC. The match will kickoff at 7 p.m. The Hokies are one of two ACC teams that HPU will face this season along with Pittsburgh.
