College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford 13th after First Round of Golfweek Invite

DESTIN, Fla. – Guilford College’s men’s golf team shot 301 in Sunday’s first round of the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational at the Raven Golf Course. The Quakers are 13th in the 18-team field, 15 strokes behind leader LaGrange College, which carded a two-over-par 286.

The University of Texas at Tyler had Buddy Hallman shoot a 69 and teammate George Toone a 70, which helped the Patriots to second place, one shot behind LaGrange. Methodist University, Illinois Wesleyan College, Berry College and the University of St. Thomas each shot 290, creating a four-way tie for third place.

Guilford sophomore Tanner Gross (Archdale, N.C./Homeschooled) shot a team-best 72 on the par-71, 6,561-yard course. He is tied for 15th place in the 90-man field, four behind leader Cory Howard of LaGrange. Gross started on the 10th hole and made the turn at one-over and was even on the front nine. He had three birdies in the round.

Teammate Ty Palmer (Kernersville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) shot 73 Sunday and shares 24th place. He birdie three of his first four holes, but bogeyed 18 to drop back to even after nine holes. Palmer had seven pars on the front nine, but bogeyed five and seven to finish his round at two-over.

Guilford’s Drew Thompson and Harrison Frye (High Point, N.C./High Point Central) both shot 78 to account for the Quakers’ team score of 301. Nick Shedd shot 82 in the first round.

The 54-hole tournament, which features 15 teams ranked in the Oct. 3 Golf Coaches Association of America Division III Coaches ‘Poll, continues with Monday’s second round.
