College Women’s Soccer Final – Eastern Mennonite 3, Guilford 1

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Guilford College dropped a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest to Eastern Mennonite, 3-1.

Both teams stayed level, 0-0, for most of the first half with Guilford leading the shot count heading into the final minutes of the first stanza. Eastern Mennonite broke the ice late in the half scoring two goals in 1:19. Sierra Martin took a bending ball from Sara Shenk Moreno in the 39th minute to strike first. Morgan Hill followed quickly with a goal into the upper left part of the net to lengthen the lead, 2-0.

The first 25 minutes of the second half featured tight play until Nora Osei converted on a breakaway in the 71st minute for the Royals’ third goal. Guilford got on the board when Kelli Uresti won a ball in scrum and fed Morgan Henderson (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) in the 80th minute.

The Quakers outshot the Royals, 15-10, and held the edge on corner kicks, 9-4. After a physical second half, the Royals held the edge in fouls, 12-7, with ten first half fouls.

Caitlyn Young made three saves in net for the Quakers. Brianna Stanard stopped five shots in net for the Royals.

Coach Michael Shenigo’s Quakers return to action Wednesday, hosting Emory & Henry College for a 5:30 p.m. ODAC contest on Guilford’s Senior Day.
