Elon Men’s Soccer to Welcome ACC Foe Duke on Tuesday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men’s soccer team will look to extend its current four-match unbeaten streak as the Phoenix welcomes Atlantic Coast Conference foe and in-state rival Duke to Rudd Field on Tuesday, Oct. 21, in its final non-conference match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Series History
Tuesday’s game will represent the 13th all-time meeting between the Phoenix and the Blue Devils and the fifth time Duke has made the trip to Elon. The Blue Devils hold a commanding 9-0-3 advantage all-time against the maroon and gold in a series that dates back to 1980. Duke had a 3-0 win last season at home over the Phoenix, but has played to a pair of draws the last time the two teams have met in Elon in 2010 and 2012.

Last Time Out
Goals by junior Cauê Da Silva and sophomore Chad Craig helped the Phoenix to its third straight win in a 2-0 victory over Drexel on Saturday, Oct. 18. Da Silva added his second score of the year in the 17th minute while Craig netted his first career score in the 41st minute of action against the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions.

Elon and senior goalkeeper Nathan Dean posted their eighth shutout of the year, tying for the second-best mark in a single season in school history. Elon and keeper Kip Rackley also had eight clean sheets in 1987.

About Elon (7-4-3, 3-1-1 CAA)
After dropping its league-opening match against Hofstra, Elon has gone unbeaten in its last four games and will look to improve on their 4-1-1 record at home. The Phoenix has had multi-goal games in its last three matches after scoring just one goal or less in the 10 matches prior.

Junior James Brace leads the team with 12 points coming on his team-high six goals. Going into Saturday’s match versus Drexel, Brace was ranked seventh in the nation in game-winning goals with four.

During Elon’s four-game unbeaten streak, the Phoenix is averaging 2.25 goals per game on 14.5 shots. The maroon and gold also has an outstanding 30-4 advantage in corners during that stretch and is allowing only 0.25 goals per game.

Craig became the fourth non first-year Phoenix player to score a goal for the first time in his career this season. Miguel Salazar, Rett Webb and Eliot Browarsky also notched their first career scores this season.

In goal, Dean has played every minute between the posts and is allowing only 0.75 GAA with 40 saves and a save percentage of .784.

On Monday, senior Jason Waterman was named the league’s Player of the Week, sharing honors with Delaware’s Guillermo Delgado, for his performance at nationally ranked UNC Wilmington last Wednesday. Waterman netted his first game-winner of the season in the 84th minute of the contest and also had an assist in the Phoenix’s 2-1 win over the Seahawks.

Scouting Duke (5-7-1, 2-4 ACC)
The Blue Devils, under sixth-year head coach John Kerr, returned sevens starters from a team that went 8-5-6 a year ago, including a 3-3-5 mark in ACC play. Duke has lost four straight, including a 4-1 setback versus No. 11 Notre Dame last Friday in Durham, N.C.

Cameron Moseley has a team-high 11 points on the year on the strength of his team-best five goals and an assist. Sean Davis has tallied a team-best five assists with one goal on the season.

Joe Ohaus has seen the most time between the posts for the Blue Devils and has a GAA of 2.00 and has 45 saves on the year.
