CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior Becca Lisson scored her first collegiate goal in the 88th minute to give the High Point University women’s soccer team a 2-1 win on the road at Charleston Southern on Wednesday afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina. Freshman Becca Rolfe assisted both goals for HPU.

“I am happy to walk away from a difficult environment with the full three points today,” head coach Marty Beall said. “The resiliency that the girls continue to show is fantastic. We are creating great chances, but we aren’t getting it done in front of goal. That being said, we walk away with three points which is a very important thing in this part of the season.”

With the score tied at 1-1 in the closing minutes, High Point earned a corner kick and Rolfe sent the ball into the box. Fellow freshman Taylor Romano headed the ball towards goal where Lisson redirected it past the CSU keeper for the game winner.

The win moves the Panthers to 8-4-3 overall and 5-2-1 in the Big South. Charleston Southern drops to 5-11-1 and 1-6-1 in conference play.

High Point took the lead in the 11th minute when junior Amy Burch headed home a goal off a corner kick to put the Panthers in front by a 1-0 score. Burch made a near-post run on the corner kick by Rolfe to score her first goal of the season.

The Panthers held the 1-0 lead until the final 17 seconds of the half when CSU took advantage of a mistake by HPU keeper Jordan Beets to tie the game at 1-1. Beets mishandled a ball at the edge of the box allowing Lydia Frierson to score on an empty net.

High Point outshot Charleston Southern, 27-6, in the game with an 11-2 edge in shots on goal and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Panthers held CSU without a second-half shot until the 90th minute. Rolfe led HPU with six shots to go along with her two assists on the day.

Freshman Alex Persiani earned her third-straight win to improve to 4-1-1 on the season. Caitlin Cody made nine saves for Charleston Southern in a losing effort, falling to 1-5-1 for the season.

High Point returns home to take on Presbyterian College on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., in Vert Stadium. The contest against the Blue Hose is HPU’s final home game of the regular season and the team will honor its four seniors before kickoff.
