NCHSAA State 3-A Girl’s Tennis Championships – 1st Day

Mideast Regional Dominates Doubles In NCHSAA 3-A Women’s Tennis

BURLINGTON — The teams out of the Mideast Regional had a record showing on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

The top three teams out of that one regional all advanced to Saturday’s semifinals, with the other survivor out of the East.

The 3-A doubles state final a year ago featured two Cardinal Gibbons teams, with Devin Knors and Lizzie Galush defeating teammates Natalie Freeman and Summer Jacobs, and the possibility exists again for an all-Gibbons final although Galush is playing in the singles draw. Devin Knors and Jenna Knors were the number-one duo from the Mideast and will face Rocky Mount’s Chandler Brice and Eliza Fike in one semifinal.

Freeman and Jacobs, who were second to the Knors team in the regional, takes on the Fayetteville Terry Sanford team of Huda McGraw and Emma Edge on Saturday morning in the other semi. The Terry Sanford pair ousted the Midwest champions from Ledford, Taylor Freeman and Elizabeth Stroup, in the quarterfinals.

Sarah Jiang of Concord Cox Mill, the singles runner-up for the past two years, earned her way into the semis with a pair of easy wins and will face Asheville’s Adrienne Hayes in the next round. Galush of Gibbons battles Wilson Hunt’s Taylor Love in the other semifinal.

Matches start at 9 am on Saturday.
