College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford 10th After Round One at Hummingbird Intercollegiate

SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Guilford College’s men’s golf team shot 302 in Friday’s opening round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate and sits 10th among the 12-team field.

The forecast of snow for the Western Carolina mountains forced the alteration of the tournament schedule. The teams were initially slated to play Saturday and Sunday, but instead played 18 holes Friday and will play another 18 Sunday.

Clemson University played the par-71, 6,767-yard County Club of Sapphire layout at six-under par 278, one shot ahead of Furman University, which shot 278. Marshall University is third at 284, seven strokes in front of NAIA-member Cardinal Stritch University and eight in front of NCAA Division II member Wingate University (292).

Furman’s Wehman Hopke shot four-under 67 and shares the individual lead in the 76-man field with Marshall’s Logan Lagodich. J.T. Poston of tournament host Western Carolina University is one of six players tied for third place at two-under.

Guilford’s Travis Tolbert had the Quakers’ best performance, a three-over 74 that ranks 28th individually. Sophomore Tanner Gross shot a 75 and rookie Harrison Frye carded a 76. The Quakers’ Drew Thompson and Kendall Dunn both shot 77.

The tournament concludes Sunday, starting with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting.
