College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 68, N.C. Wesleyan 45

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Kali Cuttaia (Eden, N.C./Morehead (Univ. of Charleston)) and Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) scored 13 points apiece in Guilford College’s 68-45 basketball win at North Carolina Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon.

Guilford (3-1) won for the third straight game thanks to a strong defensive effort that limited the Battling Bishops (2-1) to 28.3 percent shooting from the floor and forced 21 turnovers. Weatherly scored seven of Guilford’s first 14 points in the opening five minutes as the Quakers grabbed an early 14-6 edge. Weatherly had nine first-half points and Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) drained a three-pointer at the buzzer, which gave the Quakers a 30-17 halftime lead.

A Cuttaia jumper capped a 12-4 Guilford run to open the second half that opened a 42-21 edge. North Carolina Wesleyan drew no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Weatherly also had a game- and career-high 17 rebounds for her third double-double in four games. She dished out three assists and made two steals in a solid all-around performance. Cuttaia added eight rebounds and blocked four shots. Drew finished with 11 points and Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie County (Pfeiffer)) chipped in seven points off the bench. The Quakers had 11 steals and converted the Bishops’ 21 turnovers into 22 points. Guilford held a 54-41 rebounding advantage, thanks in large part to 21 offensive rebounds that led to 26 second-chance points. N.C. Wesleyan managed three second-chance points.

Netaih Davis led the Battling Bishops with 10 points off the bench.

Guilford opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Tuesday (11/25) versus visiting Bridgewater College at 5:30 p.m.
