The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2014 University Division All-State Men’s Soccer Teams on Monday. Twenty-two players representing seven different North Carolina universities were named to first and second teams.
Charlotte led the way with five selections, including four on the first team, while Elon, High Point and UNC Wilmington and had four players chosen. Appalachian State was represented by three players and Campbell and Gardner-Webb each had one selection.
Conference USA regular season champion Charlotte, which was ranked eighth nationally in the final regular season NSCAA coaches poll and compiled a 14-4-1 overall record, placed four players on the All-State first team. Austin Pack was the NCCSIA All-State first team goalkeeper, and joined on the first unit by 49er defender Biko Bradnock-Brennan, midfielder Dominic Bonilla and forward Kyle Parker.
Pack was a second-team All-CUSA selection after starting all 19 games and recording a 0.88 goals-against average. Bradnock-Brennan was a first-team All-League choice after helping the 49er defense record eight shutouts. Bonilla was a second-team All-Conference pick and finished the year with three goals and eight assists (14 points). The CUSA Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Parker led Charlotte with 25 points on nine goals and seven assists.
Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion UNC Wilmington finished the year with a 13-5-2 overall record and also reached the second round of the NCAA College Cup. Three Seahawks were chosen for the All-State team – defender Jacob VanCompernolle, midfielder Jamie Dell and forward Colin Bonner. VanCompernolle was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-CAA after starting all 20 games. Dell led the Seahawks with 10 goals, including six game-winners. Bonner joined Dell on the All-CAA first-team after scoring four times and setting up four other goals.
High Point, which finished 10-8-2 overall and in third place in the Big South Conference, was represented on the All-State team by midfielder Ebe Kudolo and forward Mamadee Nyepon. Kudolo was a first-team All-Conference and Big South All-Freshman team selection after leading the league in assists (8). Nyepon earned first-team All-Big South and All-Tournament recognition after scoring 12 times. He finished his career as High Point’s career goal-scoring leader (41).
First-team All-Sun Belt Conference defender Alex Beranger of Appalchian State and second-team All-CAA midfielder James Brace of Elon, who led the Phoenix with six goals (four game-winners), were also named to the all-state first side.
The NCCSIA All-State second team includes Nathan Dean, Nathan Diehl and Miguel Salazar of Elon, Austin Yearwood and Renato Punyed of High Point, Alex Herbst and Stanley Broaden from Appalachian State, Brayden Smith of UNC Wilmington, Brandt Bronico of Charlotte, Bradley Farias of Campbell and Ali Al-Gashamy of Gardner-Webb.
Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
