UNC-W Dropping Sports

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is dropping 4 sports teams effective the 2015-16 School Year.
– Outdoor Men’s Track and Field
– Outdoor Women’s Track and Field
– Indoor Women’s Track and Field
– Men’s Cross Country

In the Chancellor’s Letter posted on the UNC-W Website, he stated that they needed “right-size” to athletic offerings. Schools are constantly faced with shrinking budgets. They either raise student fees or cut programs. It’s never an easy call.

  1. The University of Alabama Birmingham just dropped football at the end of this season….Others like Georgia State might be looking to do the same…..

  2. The football problem goes back to you really need an on-campus stadium to bring the students in for the college football games……

  3. This problem is bigger than most understand. 95% of all university sports lose money and are supported by donations and student fees. When you consider all of the state cutbacks to the universities, overall donations down across the board for all giving, and the financial uncertain most of the public faces. Even the large universities are making less in the stadiums because more people are staying home with the TV packages available. Look at the situation with the Louisiana school last year having to bus the team to Indiana instead of flying, UAB dropping football, WSSU left D1 and came back to D2 due to money issues, and NCCU recently stated in a newspaper interview it may have to reconsider its D1 status and asked each sports dept to reduce cost. If you are not in a conference with strong TV dollars, then your future is uncertain. Conferences such as the MEAC are only a few blows from folding year after year competing at the D1 level. I would not be surprised to see the MEAC allowing schools to selectively drop sports such as swimming, tennis, etc over the next 5 years.

  4. The fees the state schools add to the students tuition are out of control. Why should a parent/student be paying for others to play a varsity sport. Playing a sport is a choice not a right. If you want to play you should pay not the other way around.

  5. Dump track for sand volleyball , how is that travel budget gonna be when all the sand volleyball games are on west coast , crazy
