Game Report: Page vs Southwest Guilford Boys Basketball

The Cowboys played hosts tonight as they welcomed the Pirate of Page High School. Both teams come into tonight’s contest following a road victory last night with Page over Northern and Southwest over Andrews. The Pirates victory moved them to the .500 mark at 3-3, while the victory kept the Cowboys winning streak at 5. Both teams were looking to keep the winning going as the game tipped off.

The Pirates opened the scoring with a layup on their first possession which gave them the early lead. A lead which turned out to be their largest and only lead of the night. Within 40 seconds the Cowboys made it 5-2, then by the 6:12 mark the Pirates called a timeout once they were down 11-2. But the bleeding continued for the visiting team as a 3 pointer put the margin to 14-2 before the Pirates finally tallied another bucket. Southwest continued controlling the game at 28-6, but a quick 4-0 run at the close of the frame ended it at 28-10.

The second quarter was ugly for both teams as neither team could get into a flow. Both teams were stagnant and sloppy with careless turnovers and poor shooting. The Pirates took advantage and got the lead down to 32-20 with a basket at the 3:40 mark. That bucket was their last of the half as the Cowboys turned up the defensive intensity and scored 6 straight to close out the half at 38-20.

The second half opened up with a Cowboy basket making it 40-20 and for the remainder of the game the lead hovered around the 20 point threshold.

The Cowboys were able to maintain control of the game and tempo despite some ugly spells in the final frame. The Pirates were never able to get any traction as the Cowboys held on strong to win 65-46.

The Cowboys remain undefeated on the early season at 6-0, while the Pirates fall to 3-4. Page was led by Jalen Seegars with 20. Southwest was led by Kaymon Mitchell with 18, 9 Rebs, 2 Stls, KJ Langley with 15, 3 Asts, 3 Stls, 2 Rebs, and Ben Ferguson with 11. Southwest hosts Grimsley on Friday night.
