GC Pride Women Sail To 70-56 Win In Conference Opener

HUNTINGDON, Ala. – Shanita Hampton led all scorers with sixteen points as the Pride Women’s Basketball Team opened USA South Athletic Conference play with a 70-56 victory over the Hawks of Huntingdon College.

The Pride women came out fast and only trailed two times in the game by a one point margin. In the first half of play, Greensboro College retook the lead for the final time at 13-12 and was able to extend their lead to 37-27 heading into the break.

After the intermission period, the Pride defense came to life forcing the Hawks into 10 turnovers resulting in 13 points. As the game wound down, Alexis Hite connected on three straight shots from behind the arch to aid the Pride women to the 70-56 victory.

“I thought our effort was outstanding today as we haven’t played a game since December 4th,” Pride Head Coach Randy Tuggle said following the game. “Syerra (Troutman) did a great job executing our defensive plan on Huntingdon’s and the conference’s leading scorer holding her below her average. I really hope that we can take the momentum from today’s win into our game tomorrow against LaGrange.”

Syerra Troutman joined Hampton in double figures with 14 points while Hite also added eleven points in the game. Tiffani Stephens led the way in the contest with a team leading seven rebounds to go along with two blocks.

The Pride women (6-1, 1-0 USAS) will return to the court tomorrow afternoon against the Panthers of LaGrange College. The USA South showdown is slated to get underway at 3:00 PM.
