College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 66, Roanoke 64

SALEM, Va. – Matt McCarthy’s (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) nine-foot jumper in the lane with three seconds left gave visiting Guilford College a 66-64 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Roanoke College Wednesday.

Roanoke’s Joey Miller converted a traditional three-point play with 13.9 seconds remaining to tie the score for the fourth and final time. After a Maroons’ (6-6, 1-2 ODAC) timeout, Guilford got the ball to McCarthy off a screen near the free-throw line before he was picked up by two defenders. The Quakers’ senior dribbled in before pulling back to create space for his game-winning bucket. Roanoke inbounded immediately, but could not get off a shot before the final horn.

Guilford senior forward Jonny Rice (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford (Washington and Lee)) enjoyed a career night with 27 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs. He shot 10-of-18 from the floor and made seven-of-nine free throws. He had 19 by halftime, including all of his points from the charity stripe.

Rice, along with senior forward Will Koppenhaver (season-high 11 points) and junior center Will Freeman (5 points) helped the Quakers to a 28-18 edge in frontcourt scoring, critical on a night when perimeter standouts McCarthy and Trever Hyatt struggled to three-of-14 three-point shooting. The trio also helped hold Roanoke big man Daniel Eacho to 10 points, more than six shy of his team-leading season average.

Andrew Daniels paced four Maroons in double-figure scoring with 13 points, 10 in the second half. Julian Ramirez tallied 11 points and five assists. Eacho and Carter Wright added 10 points apiece. Roanoke enjoyed a 44-35 edge in rebounds, including 17 at the offensive end, which led to 18 points. Daniels’ eight boards paced the Maroons.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers stay on the road to face 16th-ranked Randolph-Macon College Saturday (1/10) in a 2:00 p.m. ODAC contest.
